Job Description

Financial Management responsibilities include: timely and accurate preparation of financial reporting requirements, including quarterly and annual GAAP and Statutory Financial Statement preparation in conjunction with Group Financial Management and the Corporate Controller.

This position is responsible for leadership, talent development, operational execution and management of a team of 3 to 5 accounting reports.

The position is responsible for providing oversight of financial processes of group subsidiaries leads the execution of projects including financial system conversions. In this capacity the position performs the following:

Leads through vision, strategic planning, collaboration and execution to meet/exceed goals.

Establishes appropriate productivity metrics and departmental performance expectations.

Coaches, mentors and develops team members in the timely and accurate completion of assigned responsibilities.

Promotes teamwork and interchangeability to ensure department objective are met.

Actively participates in and facilitates management team meetings

Encourages staff to identify processing and service improvements.

Responsible for ongoing performance feedback (establishing goals, monitoring performance, completing reviews and providing salary and incentive information.)

Identifies growth opportunities and challenging assignments to further develop key talent.

The position is also responsible for the following:

Evaluation, implementation, and maintenance of accounting policies and procedures related to both GAAP and Statutory Accounting requirements.

Researching and evaluating new GAAP and Statutory accounting pronouncements for applicability and implementing when required to ensure compliance of financial records and reporting.

Effectively coordinating GFM efforts in responding in a timely manner to state insurance department regulatory inquiries\exams and internal and external audit requests.

Evaluating exam or audit findings and implementing recommendations.

Providing support for the annual budget process and completing budget to actual reporting and various other business analyses.

Maintaining strong financial processes, procedures, and internal controls.

Effectively interacting with other Group departments and corporate areas in the completion of initiatives and projects.

Management of staff to ensure timely completion of numerous quarterly and annual state compliance filings.

Indentifying opportunities to improve processes to enable team to improve customer satisfaction and capitalize on increased efficiency to take on additional value added responsibilities that can benefit the profit center and company.

Review planned acquisitions, provide analysis of the impact on financial reporting, and develop a plan for integrating in ledger and reporting process.

Evaluating annual statement reporting changes and coordinating efforts of staff, other group areas and corporate to ensure that changes will be completed efficiently and accurately.

Maintaining PeopleSoft chart field to ensure that ledger can capture accurately and efficiently financial information required by Group profit center management and statutory reporting.

Identifying business execution risks; developing contingency plans and coordinating execution.

Demonstrating a collaborative approach to problem–solving by successfully working with and effectively communicating with other group areas (i.e. actuaries, strategic business units and operations) and with corporate by clarifying detailed projects and process information.

Major Opportunities and Decisions:

Managing the processes supporting the Group Profit Center financial accounting and reporting functions, including monthly/quarterly accounting closing processes and Statutory and GAAP financial reporting and analysis.

Supporting corporate project initiatives and providing timely responses to corporate requests.

The position must also be accountable for reviewing the overall control environment within the Group Profit Center regarding PeopleSoft to ensure that internal controls are in place and operating effectively including monthly account reconciliation.

This position has oversight of the analysis and development of new accounting and management report processes and procedures to support new product roll-outs, joint ventures and acquisitions.

Collaborating with Others – Partner with Operations, Strategic Business Units, Business Technology Support, Group Actuarial and Group Cash and Suspense Accounting to accomplish Group Profit Center and Company goals.

Holding People Accountable – Review staff performance throughout year and work with team members to achieve the expectations of a high performance culture.

Operational Excellence- Use business expertise to assist staff with identification of areas for process improvements and oversee the implementation of procedural enhancements.

Principal Accountabilities:

Appropriate review and approval of staff and other Group area journal entries and account reconciliation for monthly and quarterly closing.

Coordinate, Communicate, and Manage Finance Team to ensure accurate and timely financial information.

Coordinate and communicate with GFM leadership, Group SBUs, GCSA and Corporate FM&C.

Evaluate, coordinate and implement new accounting policies and procedures in conjunction with new GAAP or Statutory Accounting Pronouncements and resulting from implementation of new Joint Ventures / Products/ Acquisitions.

Development and training of staff through timely status meetings and other developmental activities.

Review, evaluation and updating of relevant procedures, Model Audit Rule documentation and internal controls.

Coordinate efforts of staff and other Group areas, review procedures and approve results for the preparation of various quarterly and annual state compliance

Support and coordinate Group profit center efforts to respond to both internal and external audit and examination requests on a timely basis and implement required recommendations.

Demonstrated strength in Excel, Access and modeling skills.

Working knowledge of project planning, tracking, requirement analysis, system requirements and documentation.



Education and Experience:



Education:

Bachelors degree in Accounting

CPA/ MBA desired

Experience:

7+ years of progressive insurance industry statutory and GAAP financial reporting experience.

Proficiency with PeopleSoft General Ledger.

Proficiency with software applications such as Essbase, MS Excel and MS Access.

Experienced managing group of people with varying skill levels.

Strong knowledge of internal controls documentation and testing as it relates to Model Audit Rule.

Other Requirements:

Overtime is necessary to meet demands of position and objectives of the department.
