Embedded System Design Engineer - Vehicles
Fulltime
Dayton, Ohio.
Job Summary
This client construction group develops positioning and control products for earthmoving and paving machines, using technologies such as GPS, optical total stations, lasers, and sonics.
The products are utilized in a range of construction and mining applications where the operator of the machine benefits from having accurate horizontal and vertical guidance.
The System Design Engineer - Vehicles is responsible for the specification, design, and documentation of future machine control systems.
The system engineer works directly with marketing, multi-discipline engineering teams, and machine OEMs to develop innovative, high quality products.
The position requires practical application of electrical, software, and mechanical engineering skills.
The system engineer exercises excellent interpersonal skills to work within ambiguous situations, helping transform requirements into product strategy and technical direction.
Key Responsibilities:
Collaborate with multi-discipline teams to define and develop products
Create earthmoving and paving machine control system designs
Work with other system engineering team members in the creation and application of system architectures
Specify system devices appropriate for intended applications
Define J1939 CAN communication interfaces including electrical implementation, bus loading analyses, and messaging protocols
Define machine control system Ethernet and WiFi networks including layout, system usage, security, and messaging
Create harness and cable schematics describing connectivity between system devices
Provide technical input for grade control system verification testing
Generate and maintain professional grade design documentation
Travel (including international) is less than 10%
Skills & Experience Required:
Experience with embedded real time systems software development
Familiar with Ethernet and WiFi networks, including layout, security, and TCP/IP
Experience with CAN; hardware layer, protocols, and analysis tools such as CANalyzer
Strong electronics background; capable of understanding and preparing system diagrams and schematics
Ability to turn market requirements into engineering specifications and other product development documentation
Knowledge of hardware and software product development processes
Solid analytical and problem solving skills with attention to detail
Possesses technical leadership abilities; uses influence and experience in support of business objectives
Ability to work independently and as part of a global team
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
BS in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or similar program
Minimum of five years product development experience
Desirable Skills / Qualifications:
Experience working within an Agile development environment
Experience designing and interfacing with vehicular communication and control systems
Familiar with functions and usage of construction machinery
Detailed knowledge of the composition and application of machine control systems,
including how they are utilized and by whom
