Layer 1 Technician Tasks

Professional Skills

Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal.

Efficient Response Time to phone, emails, texts and deliverables etc.

Must have own transportation to move between multiple sites

Organizational skills and strong attention to detail

Problem solving and troubleshooting methodology skills

Technical leadership and ability to lead tasks and phases and be self-sufficient in the field.

Prior to Installation

Conduct onsite readiness assessment of each facility to ensure each MDF/IDF is in good
condition to complete installation of equipment.

Review rack elevations with customer POC

Inventory equipment onsite and move to the applicable comm room locations.

Take pictures of the existing condition of racks and equipment prior to installation services.

Identify and label connections per Port Mapping Document (provided by customer)

During Installation

The following procedures will be conducted for each device included in the planned maintenance window.

Install new equipment included in maintenance window into existing rack

Patch power cables into new equipment and power up device(s)

Label and patch critical connections (using customer provided patch cabling)

Once critical components are patched, engineer can begin testing procedures

Patch non-critical connections (using customer provided patch cabling)

Engineer to verify proper operation of devices.

Post Installation

Remove all scrap and trash material left in comm room from installation

Take post migration photos of comm room and installed devices

Provide Day-0 support immediately following cutover

Provide Day-1 support for up to 48 hours immediately following installation

Installation and Day-0 support are assumed to take place during a single trip onsite and will be complete in a 1-week timeframe.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

1-3 years rack and stack experience, data center experience, network experience

Works with both internal and external users to understand requirements and needs

Executes requirements through application of best practices to ensure consistency, maintainability and compliance

Strong ability to follow process, installation guidelines and comprehension of decencies on network roll out/network change protocols

Experience with technology change management

Experience and proficiency with enterprise wireless and network engineering standards

Knowledge of network and wireless standards and installation best practices

Experienced in the installation/ deployment of WAPs

General Knowledge or familiarity of building construction

Knowledge of structured cabling standards and best practices

Ability to read, comprehend floor plans

Knowledge of Infrastructure in Data Center Infrastructure/Telco Closets/MDF/IDF

Knowledge of structured cabling in commercial environments and Experience in cable systems patching

Knowledge of National Building Codes and standard including BISCI standards.

Knowledge of TIA/EIA 568A and 568B Standards with experience in terminating copper cables
CAT5,5E,6,6A on patch panel and station jacks

Experience in network rack, stack and patching including ability to read and execute a patching schedule

Perform major and minor preventive maintenance and repairs by troubleshooting cabling system issues.

Identify, track and remove abandoned cable as required

Test every newly installed or relocated cable in accordance with established procedures.

Keep cable neatly tied and bundled while maintaining safety standards.

Record time and materials used on daily work assignment.

Return all equipment and supplies to respective locations after the job completion.

Complete required paperwork including installation checklist, timesheets, service orders, inspection reports, closeout photos and various other logs.

Understand, adhere to, and promote environmental, health & safety policies.

Escalate any issues promptly following written escalation protocol

Assist co-workers with installation and routine maintenance of structured cabling systems.

Maintain and neat and orderly work environment and clean up any and all debris and packaging at end of shift.
