Job Description

Responsible for the engineering and support of hardware and operating systems; supporting database management systems and database administrators; supporting application environments and core infrastructure competencies, including regulatory compliance, SAN-attached servers, automation, and scripting.

Responsibilities:

Builds, maintains, and supports complex UNIX (AIX, Solaris) and Linux operating systems in an enterprise environment

Provides technical leadership for primary products and subsystems

Evaluates new and existing software and hardware products

Administer production, staging and development environments for a myriad of applications in an agile organization

Participates in enterprise projects as subject matter expert

Understands and applies change management procedures/principles

Proactively evaluate new products, vendor patches and releases

Collaborates with internal clients in support of technology requirements

Participates in 24x7 on-call rotation for research and resolution of production system problems and respond to escalated support requests via a ticketing system

Provide training, support and guidance other administrators and technical support teams

Participates in capacity planning

Participates in hardware/software budget planning

Create and maintain accurate, up-to-date documentation

Provide input to improve the stability, security, efficiency and scalability of systems

Ensure business continuity provisions are configured, available and tested

Required skills:

UNIX/Linux systems administration experience including support of internet-facing servers

Strong troubleshooting ability

Experience with middleware applications like Tomcat and Apache

Ability to perform multiple roles as part of an IT team including: systems and database administration, project management, business technology consultant, automation engineers, and more

Working knowledge of multi-tier applications and their dependencies including load balancing, TCP/IP networking, web services, LDAP and DNS.

Experience with monitoring tools like as Nagios, Zabbix, and Splunk

Experience with Chef or similar automation frameworks

Proficiency with file servers, including NAS and SAN, and associated protocols to serve files across a network

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; capable of writing justifications, training users in complex topics, writing status reports, documenting procedures, and interacting positively with other staff and management

Must be capable of independent problem-solving and self-direction

Ability to handle competing priorities and deliver solutions in a timely manner

Capability to easily change priorities as the business dictates

Basic knowledge of dev ops principles and AGILE development practices, tools and methodologies

Knowledge of business continuity planning/disaster recovery processes, procedures and best practices a plus

Experience in automating repetitive tasks using agile software development practices and tools such as
Chef, Puppet, GIT, BASH and Python Scripting a plus

Important Qualities:

Analytical skills. Engineer need analytical skills to evaluate network and system performance and determine how changes in the environment will affect them

Communication skills. Engineer must be able to describe problems and their solutions to non-IT workers

Problem-solving skills. Engineer must be able to quickly resolve any problems that arise with critical systems
