Job Description

Linux Administrator

Arlington VA

Linux Administrator will be responsible for installs, configures, tunes and maintains the Linux operating systems and applications.

Recognizes and troubleshoots problems with server hardware and applications software. Establishes and documents standards and procedures.

Responsibilities:

Installs, configures, tunes, and maintains Linux OS operating systems and supporting hardware.

Troubleshoots Linux server and OS issues. Independently utilizes all available resources (knowledge bases, online resources, etc.) to ensure timely resolution of server issues.

Installs and configures third party software as needed or requested by customer.

Develops operating procedures for system administration activities including system monitoring,
performance tuning, backup/recovery, server architecture design, and system maintenance.

Follows operating procedures and utilizes established support tools for analysis and reporting.

Performs regular system maintenance, hardware and software upgrades, server migrations and performance tuning.

Interfaces with Network Engineers, Storage Engineers, Database Administrators and Application Teams to optimize systems use and configuration.

Participates in project planning and takes a leadership role as needed to ensure timely and successful completion of projects assigned to LINUX server team.

Lends technical knowledge and recommendations to associates as required.

Provides server hardware capacity recommendations

Provides installation support for new applications and software releases. Interfaces with hardware vendors to maintain and schedule repair of equipment in a timely manner.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science OR 4 years of UNIX administration.

Experience:

Five years of experience with Unix/Linux system administration.

Experience with most aspects of the UNIX operating system: paging/swapping, inter-process
communication, devices and device driver fundamentals, file system concepts like inode and superblock.

Experience with Veritas File system, LVM FS and VCS Veritas Cluster and NetBackup. Possesses an understanding of SAN and NAS storage concepts as well as DNS, NFS, CIFS, DHCP, etc.

Experience or understanding of ORACLE software and Database administration.

Experience or working knowledge of PeopleSoft Tuxedo and Weblogic servers.

Experience with VMware administration is preferred.

Exhibits familiarity with fundamental networking/distributed computing environments and concepts.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Analyzes and tunes computer systems based on business need as demonstrated by previous work experience.

Possesses knowledge of computer operations, system analysis, performance tuning and, familiarity with shell and kernel programming as demonstrated by previous work experience.

Writes detailed scripts in at least one, preferably two administrative languages (shell scripts, Perl, Tk) as demonstrated by previous work experience.

Trains users in complex topics as demonstrated by previous work experience.
