Job Description

Our client, a leader in the home building industry, is looking to hire a Director of Tax in their Reston Headquarters.

This Director of Tax is responsible for directing all tax planning, tax accounting and tax compliance functions for the company, and ensuring that all areas of the company’s taxation issues are adequately and timely addressed.

This person is responsible for directing all Risk Management (insurance) functions for the company.

Ensuring insurance policies are in place at all times at the lowest possible pricing without compromising quality of coverage, managing workers compensation claims, assisting the General Counsel with General Liability claims, managing subcontractor insurance compliance, and other related items.

Essential Job Functions

Tax Planning and Compliance:

Coordination of income tax compliance & planning as necessary, as well as other miscellaneous tax projects

General oversight of other tax compliance (sales & use tax, property tax, related tax audits, etc.)

Keep abreast of industry tax issues for possible tax savings strategies

Research or review research of various tax matters or possible tax planning strategies

First review of all federal and state tax income tax returns prepared by the Tax Manager.

Review of estimates and extensions for reasonableness

Active Board member for the DHC planning structures (RVN & Funding II)

Tax Accounting:

Plan and monitor permanent and temporary differences (including stock equity transactions accounted for through APIC) and tax rates to enable timely updates of the tax projections as requested

Review GAAP projections on a monthly basis with the Tax Manager to develop effective tax rate model throughout the year

Ensure that all tax accounts are reconciled to the general ledger

Review provision to return true-up and analyze any differences

Oversee FAS 109 calculations and tax accrual

Prepare tax footnote for financial statements

Technical Support:

Utilize technology tools (including DART database) to develop and improve tax return preparation process efficiency and accuracy.

This includes M-1 differences, trial balance downloads, Apportionment by state, Apportionment by city (Ohio) and other supporting calculation.

Utilize technology tools (including DART database) to develop and improve our ability to analyze the quality of insurance of our subcontractors.

This includes ensuring that a monthly audit of Compliance Depot is performed, as well as validating that all "professional vendors are classified as such, all subcontractors of company are appropriately classified ensuring they are not "misclassified by divisions and thus fall outside our tracking system.

Administration (HR Tax and Risk Management):

Update job descriptions for direct reports and modify as necessary to appropriately identify responsibilities, functions and tasks assigned to a particular position.

Establish and communicate performance standards to all direct reports.

Complete annual performance appraisals and six-month reviews on all direct reports. The written annual appraisals should be well documented and contain specific training/development plans. Employee Self

Evaluation Forms should be completed by all direct reports and reviewed as part of the performance appraisal process.

Any direct report who is not meeting his/her performance goals should be counseled following effective performance management principles.

Risk Management:

Coordinate the purchase of commercial insurance that provides indemnity for catastrophic losses.

This includes delegating research and interviews with various staff to gather data requested during the policy application process.

Ensure that all insurance policies are renewed on a timely basis, in a competitive manner.

Review annual audit of subcontractor service type to ensure classification is consistent with work conducted.

Review open claims and loss runs from our TPA’s and ensure that reserve amounts are adequate and have been appropriately accrued in the financial statements

Settle all W/C claims in a timely manner at terms that are most favorable to company

General oversight of Subcontractor insurance compliance through the use of third party vendor
Compliance Depot.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree, CPA preferred

At least 15 years’ relevant experience
