How to Improve Mental Health in Workplace

Stress in the workplace has increased rapidly in the last few years.

A quarter of employees say that their job is the big stressors in their lives, while 40% describe their jobs as highly stressful.

Health complaints are more likely to be related to job stress than personal, financial, or family problems. Stressful jobs can negatively affect employeewell being as well as increase healthcare costs, reduce productivity, and lead to employee turnover. A temporary condition such as new management, open enrollment, systems conversion, or busy seasons can cause elevated job stress. 

The importance of creating a working environment that supports the well-being of your employees cannot be overstated. Inefficient processes and overly rigid schedules can cause your employees to feel overwhelmed, stressed, and exhausted. The effects of all of these factors can be detrimental to their mental health and productivity.


1. Discussion is must

It is important to help employees talk openly about mental health in order to improve employee mental wellness. Taking responsibility and letting employees know they aren't alone helps them realise this is not just a fear, but a reality. If the issue can be identified and allowed to be a topic of conversation - removing the taboo surrounding acknowledging work-related stress - it can create progress on its own.

Additionally, employees should be encouraged to take breaks. Employees can come back to work refreshed by walking outside, taking a stretch break, or enjoying a healthy snack. Taking breaks away from desks and screens also allows employees to spend a few relaxed minutes with each other.

Team building even includes regular check-in calls and hosting social activities like wellness challenges for remote and hybrid employees in order to build a culture of open, respectful communication. In order for employees to be able to work together on projects and tasks, informal relationships are vital. In addition, it boosts morale throughout the organization.

2. Encourage good mental and physical health

Healthy physical and emotional practices can have a positive impact on the entire workplace when management promotes them. The key to success is leadership involvement. Health challenges, incentive programs, and overall wellness programs introduced and implemented by leaders have been shown to improve employee health, save healthcare costs, and increase productivity and morale. 


3. Provide tools for mind refreshments

Providing employees with education and personalized activities can help them feel supported as well as provide them with effective tools and coping strategies. 

An employee's psychological strengths and challenges can also be examined through a mental health assessment. In many cases, assessments provide a comprehensive picture of an employee population's mental health needs and provide a starting point for developing effective, relevant mental health programs.

4. Implement a program for staff assistance

A company's first step towards achieving greater corporate well-being is to seek counselling and support. The focus on mental health at work has shifted, and many companies are offering programs that address chronic stress, anxiety, depression, burnout, and more. 


5. Establish a pleasant work atmosphere

Employee productivity, job turnover, and total earnings are all recognised to be significantly impacted by the workplace environment. By keeping employees informed about advancements, departmental changes, business goals, and policies, leaders may foster a positive workplace culture. These give guidance, foster trust, and relieve workplace stress.

Additionally, there are top-down policy changes that may be advantageous to the culture of your workforce, such as flex time that allows workers to exercise and take care of personal matters while still finishing a full day of work, as well as remote and/or hybrid work options, whether it involves a full relocation to a home office or just one or two days per week.



6. Convey your concern

When individuals and groups of similar people comprehend and care about the values and circumstances of other individuals and groups, that understanding and compassion is an essential part of an organisation. By expressing and accepting care in our interpersonal interactions, whether at work and at home, it is displayed every day. 

Offering volunteer days for the community, sponsoring family events, praising strong employer-employee communication, and elevating the voices of both employees and management at community events are all examples of ways your organisation may demonstrate its concern.
